Image The most beneficial habits should naturally be created first, which is why Ayurveda so passionately advocates massage for everyone, and particularly for infants. New babies need regular massage. Babies in India are massaged for up to a years after they are born, and most traditions of mother and child care for at least 40 days after delivery.

Baby massage stimulates the growing immune and nervous systems, and provides critical emotional nourishment. Some modern research suggests that premature infants who receive regular massage gain more weight and thrive more efficiently than do their peers who are not massaged.

Oil massage is food for the baby's skin and nerves. It strengthens the skin, improves its color and texture, and makes it soft and smooth.

Sesame oil medicated with herbs is Ayurveda's traditional choice for massage oil, but almond, olive, sunflower, or coconut oilcan also used, according to climate and availability.
